Tension Spring
Tension springs, also known as extension springs, are coil springs, normally tightly-wound, that are loaded in tension. Tension springs usually have hooks or loops which are attached to components. If these components are moved or pulled apart, the spring opposes this extension, exerting a force to bring them together.

Torsion springs work by torsion or twisting. As the spring is twisted it applies a resistive torque. This torque increases at a linear rate. Torsion springs should always be designed so that the force or torque causes the spring to tighten (i.e. if the torsion or twisting action is in a clockwise direction the spring should be anti-clockwise or left-hand wound.) They can be used in the other direction but the operating stresses are likely to cause problems.
These springs can have an endless number of leg designs. These fall into the three categories of tangential legs, radial legs and axial legs. In addition, torsion springs can be single (with one coiled body) or double (with the two helical bodies connected by a central leg) and can be closed or open coiled.
There are a wide range of uses for torsion springs, and are normally used over a mandrel. JB Springs can manufacture and supply a wide range of torsion spring from small torsion springs used in electrical equipment and hinges to larger torsion springs used in agricultural equipment.
The following parameters are important in establishing the correct design of torsion springs:
The size of any mandrel over which the spring is to work. As a torsion spring deflects, its inside diameter reduces and failures are likely if the spring begins to grip the mandrel
The size of any hole in which the spring fits
The lateral space available. As a torsion spring deflects it increases in length and failures are likely if this growth cannot be accommodated in the application
The torques/forces required and the rotation at which they are required
The operating environment. This will determine the choice of material and/or the choice of any finish for corrosion protection
The maximum working deflection required
The frequency of operation
How and where the spring is to be fitted. This will determine type of ends required

Flat springs are a versatile form of spring manufactured from flat strip or sheet material rather than round wire.

Spiral springs (also known as clock springs or power springs) are flat strip springs wound into a spiral to store rotational energy.
When deflected, the spring delivers torque rather than linear force, making them ideal for applications requiring controlled rotation or energy storage over multiple turns.

Torsion Spring Manufacturers
As expert torsion spring manufacturers, we know this type of spring is ideal where there is a requirement for angular movement with the legs of the spring attached to other components. When those components rotate around the centre of the spring, the spring tries to push them back to their original position. Annealed carbon steels are relatively easy to form but usually require hardening and tempering after forming, this may cause distortion of thin or complex components. Carbon steels may also require corrosive protection i.e: plating or oiling. Stainless steels avoid the need for corrosion protection and hardening and tempering. Bi-directional bends in stainless steel are limited due to grain direction within the material.
Conventional blanking operations may form a burr which can be removed by mechanical deburring operations. Small or delicate components may not lend themselves to this type of process, and consideration needs to be given at the design stage to the effects burrs might have on the function of the component.
We do have experience in the force testing of flat springs using jigs and fixtures. Calculating of force is a very lengthy process and in many cases force requirements can only be verified by prototype production and testing. Our team are able to produce small sample batches of components ready for testing before resorting to the production of expensive tooling for bulk production.
Garter Spring Manufacturers
Garter springs are helical springs whose ends are connected to form a circle which then provides a strong radial force. They are formed from extension springs to provide a contracting radial force.
To connect the garter spring into a loop, one end may be coned so that it fits tightly into the other end and creates a nib joint, or it may be looped so that it can be hooked on to the opposite end. They can be supplied pre-assembled into loops, or in lengths – this is particularly useful for standard weights or diameters, as it allows you to cut and assemble your garter springs as needed.
Typically made from carbon steel or stainless steel wire, garter springs are often utilised in oil seals and shaft seals, motor drive belts and conveyor systems. The constant radial force which they exert is ideal for creating a pressurised seal around a pipe to prevent leakage or contamination.
Rings and Circlip Manufacturers
Wire rings are a cost-effective replacement for more traditional circlips; here at Airedale Springs we can provide wire rings and circlips most appropriate for your needs. Used to allow rotation but prevent lateral movement, wire rings and circlips are available for either external use where they are intended to fit over a shaft into a machined groove, or for internal use where they fit inside a bore.
Our high-speed CNC equipment and specialized tooling allows us to manufacture a vast range, from standard rings to those requiring special ends or non-standard shaped gaps. We can work with a variety of different wire diameters and external diameters, and take into account a wide range of factors to ensure that your wire rings or circlips meet your requirements perfectly.

Prison Spring Manufacturers
Traditional extension springs, as their name suggests, are extended in use and apply a load in tension. Their design does not limit the length that they may be extended, which can result in the spring being stretched way beyond their elastic limit; i.e. the point at which the spring does not return to its original length. An extension spring, such as the “Airedale Prison Spring”, could be a solution to this problem if the extended length needs to be limited.
The Airedale Prison Spring consists of three parts; a compression spring and two “U” shaped wire forms.
The two wire forms are pushed through the compression spring from different sides until the ends of the wire forms push up against the ends of the compression spring. When the two wire forms are pulled apart, the spring is compressed until all its coils meet; limiting the total extension of the assembly.
The three components, when fitted in their assembled condition, are used to hold safety netting between the landings in prisons. Their purpose is to allow the safety netting to flex up to a fixed length if somebody falls onto it, but not to the extent that the spring would be damaged and the netting collapse.
Airedale Springs has manufactured the “Airedale Prison Spring” for many years and it is specified on the approved Home Office Specification for H M Prisons.
Our prison springs are made to the highest possible standards, are zinc coated to BSEN 12329 standard, and are supplied unassembled.
Hose Spring Manufacturers
Airedale Springs are able to produce and supply a wide range of hose springs, thanks to our extensive manufacturing facilities in Yorkshire. We have developed cutting edge production methods which, combined with the high-quality materials we use in all of our products, allow us to produce hose springs with a constant pitch even under very small extension. Such reliable performance is a key requirement for hose springs used in vacuum cleaner hoses, and in many other applications.

Clock springs, also known as a power springs, are made by winding a pre-stressed flat strip of spring material on an arbor and into a retaining ring to create a compact power source. They provide torsion and are sometimes used in place of the traditional torsion spring, where their circular movement is more appropriate to the application. As the name implies, they are most commonly used in traditional clocks and watches, however they do have a much wider range of applications such as scenery retraction in theatres.

8.Flexo Springs
Flexo Springs is a well-established family run company, founded in 1928.
We started out in premises that were originally World War One army huts. The site has been rebuilt and developed over the years and has become the factory and offices that we have now.
In the early days we were called Flexo Steels and made the “steels” for corsets, as well as producing other metalwork that was needed for the military. We introduced a spring catalogue in the 1950’s which has grown over the years and we now have 4,200 stock items.

Established in 1946, Valley Spring has become one of the UK’s leading specialist spring manufacturer; delivering all types of coil springs, including compression, extension and torsion springs.
Valley Springs offer CNC coiling up to 50.00mm round from 0.100mm round and, with continual investment, utilise state-of-the-art grinding machines and modern controlled heat treatment for our totally cold coiled operation. New testing machines provide rate and load printouts.
Quality Assured

RSM has been producing at our Tipton site for in excess of 30 سال, following manufacture at our original West Bromwich site for over 100 سال. We have recently extended our current premises in order to incorporate the latest demands of industry.
Springs were originally manufactured in the West Bromwich area, due to its location in proximity to steel producers; themselves located locally due to deposits of coal and limestone being readily available for the smelting of iron into steel. Local steel suppliers were able to supply the finest steels suiting our industry, and many spring making companies started.
